Welcome
Firstly may we take this opportunity to thank you for entering the Newmarket Duathlon. For some of you it will be your first Duathlon and we hope that it will be memorable for all the right reasons.
Location
Riverside Middle School, off West Row Road, Mildenhall, Suffolk. When entering Mildenhall follow RAC signs to The Mildenhall Rally, then look for car park signs. The car parking, as usual for the Rally will be in a field, usually stuble, adjacent to the school.
Registration
Registration will be in the School itself in a room next to the main Rally information centre, follow signs to ‘Registration’, same as previous years. This will open at 06.00am and will close at 07.15am prompt. At Registration BTA members are required to show their British Triathlon Race Licence, otherwise the £3 levy for a day licence will have to be paid. At Registration you will receive your goody bag containing 1 sticky number to be applied to your bike and 2 race numbers, one to face forwards during the run and one to face backwards on the bike. Number belts may be worn.
Bike Racking
All bikes must be racked by 7.30am. Entrance to Transition area will only be permitted by competitors. To rack your bike you will need to show your approved safety helmet. Please rack your bike in your designated spot in accordance with your race number. After you have finished you will need to show your race number in order to re enter transition to retrieve your bike.Your race number must match that on your bike.
The race briefing will take place by Transition at 7.30am. All competitors will start together at 7.45am
If for any reason, after you have registered you do not complete the course please let an official at Transition area know.
Music
During the race personnel stereo’s, walkmans, mp3 players or ipods are not to be used. This is a British Triathlon Competition regulation.
The Start
In the main arena, look for our new ‘start/ finish’ banner.
Run Course 5km (first)
From the main Arena the course takes you around the perimeter fence before exiting the School field via the ‘Bike Racks’, CARE, this will become clearer on inspection, past Transition out of the school grounds via a Bridleway and onto Wamill Way, around a Marshall and cone and generally retrace to Transition.
Bike Course 23km
The bike course consists of 2 laps.
Exit the school via Sheldrick Way, turn left onto West Row Road(M), past airfield on RHS to turn left into Chapel Road(M), left again into Pott Hall Road(M), follow road round to right into Bargate Road and bear right again into Eldo Road(Caution here as this effectively becomes an ‘s’ bend) and immediately left into Ferry Lane(M). Continue until you reach the ‘T’ junction with B1102. At this junction you must come to a complete stop and put one foot down onto the ground, failure to comply with this will result in disqualification. Here you turn left(M) through Worlington and back into Mildenhall via Mill Street, High Street(caution at zebra crossing(M), bear left into New Street(M) and turn left(M) onto Queensway, continue past Sheldrick way to commence 2nd lap. At the end of your second lap turn left, back into Sheldrick Way to transition. At the designated line on the road you must dismount and push your bike into the transition area. Do not unfasten your helmet until you have racked your bike.
Run Course 5km (second)
Basically the same as first run, towards the finish run past transition and back into main arena to the finish.
Cycle Helmets
All helmets must be of an approved safety design, i.e. BSI, ANSI, or SNELL etc. These must be correctly fastened and worn at all times during the bike section.
Drafting
Taking shelter behind or beside another competitor or motor vehicle. Not allowed. The draft zone is described as a box 7 metres long by 3 metres wide surrounding all competitors. The front edge of your front wheel is in the centre of the front 3 metre side of that box. Other competitors are only allowed to be in your box for the purpose of overtaking and should be ‘through’ within 15 seconds. It is then your responsibility to drop back.
Marshals
All events need Marshals so if you have a travelling companion / friend who is at a loose end, all help is greatly received.
Prizes & Results
When you’ve finished look out for our ‘specially designed receptacle’ to collect one of your race numbers for the spot prize raffle. Prizes will be awarded as soon as they are to hand and there is a gap in proceedings in the main arena. This is likely to be around 11am, hopefully the grass track racing and some 50 trade stands will keep you amused till then. Results will be displayed in the Registration area.
Acknowledgements
Our thanks go out to Mildenhall C.C. for inviting us back to their Cycle Rally to run this Duathlon. To the marshals and timekeepers for guiding you and to all the other helpers who gave their time on this event.
